About Ashburton Prescribing
Who are Ashburton Prescribing? In some ways, that's easy to answer. We're a team of General Practice and PCN pharmacists based mainly in Liverpool. Our pharmacists work with General Practice teams as the expert on prescribing and all things medication.
As with most things though, there's much more to us than that. Ashburton has fundamentally always been a company that puts pharmacists first. In the grand scheme of things, we're still a relatively small and close-knit organisation, but we're continuing to grow all the time. We've worked hard to create a supportive and warm environment for our team, and given them a place where they enjoy coming to work.
Our founders were two of the first pharmacists to work this way in general practice, with over 25 years of experience in the sector between them when we were founded nearly 10 years ago in 2013, and we've worked hard to champion the role of pharmacists in general practice ever since.
What we do seems to be working, every year more GP surgeries want Ashburton Pharmacists, and thus we're on the lookout for more fresh faces to join our growing team.

What does an Ashburton Pharmacist do?
We work with a wide network of GP surgeries and PCNs. Each one is unique, but overall they have many similarities. Over the years, we've developed our services to focus on what we believe gets the most out of pharmacists in a General Practice setting.
1. Repeat Prescribing
Repeat prescriptions in a GP surgery account for the vast majority of individual patient touch points for a clinician. Ashburton Pharmacists are responsible for the processing, management and improvement of repeat prescriptions at the vast majority of the practices we work in. It's our bread and butter, and the fastest way of ensuring that a pharmacist is integral to a practice's operations and at the heart of patient safety.
2. Medicines Reconciliations
On average, there are one or more medication errors in around 80% of hospital discharge letters. That presents a significant risk of potential patient safety incidents. Ashburton Pharmacists reconcile hospital discharge letters and clinic outpatient letters using expert clinical knowledge of pharmacology alongside regional and national guidance to identify medication errors and reduce potential harm to patients.
3. Medication Reviews
Medication reviews can take many forms. Note reviews, telephone reviews, face-to-face consultations, Structured Medication Reviews and polypharmacy reviews, Ashburton Pharmacists do them all. Sometimes it's as part of our repeat prescribing work, other times it's in dedicated clinics and at Ashburton, we help support our team with these every step of the way.
4. Medicines Information
The final piece of the puzzle, and arguably one of the most important. Ashburton Pharmacists are full of knowledge about medicines and for a practice and its patients, it's a key part of the multidisciplinary approach to care. Our pharmacists are on hand to provide support and expertise to the other healthcare professionals within a surgery to help solve complex medication problems or questions.

Why should you become an Ashburton Pharmacist?
Ashburton is a warm and supportive place to work for pharmacists which we work hard to maintain. The list of reasons to join our team is long but, because we know pharmacists like detail, we'll give you five reasons.
1. Unique three-week training programme for new starters
The transition to General Practice is hard, even more so if you're brand new to the sector (as nearly all of our team were at one point). We believe providing the right level of training at the outset will help you succeed and adjust to any "fear of the unknown". Our training lead spends two weeks with all of our new starters in a mutually supportive classroom-style environment, giving you the crucial training you need to flourish as an Ashburton Pharmacist. After that, you'll spend a week shadowing in a GP surgery alongside an experienced member of our team to give you real-world experience with support on hand to help you through your first days in a new environment.
2. Ongoing support from a wider team of General Practice pharmacists
Our team is our strength. The knowledge, skill and experience that Ashburton Pharmacists have is invaluable. Working as part of our energetic and passionate team will give you the day-to-day support to allow you to thrive in your new role. General Practice throws up new challenges on a daily basis and our team has adopted the mantra "every day's a school day", as we're often asked to deal with situations and problems we may never have come across before. Being able to rely on the wider team to help offer suggestions and solutions is a crucial part of how we operate and in many ways is quite unusual for pharmacists, who are usually so used to working in isolation. We think this makes us all better pharmacists.
3. A challenging and motivating work environment
Ultimately, all of our work in General Practice is funded by resources the NHS provides. Therefore, it's only right that we ensure we demonstrate excellent value to the NHS. Ashburton Pharmacists want to be the best and our environment encourages and rewards motivated healthcare professionals towards being theauthority on medication in your practice or PCN and providing a gold standard service.
4. Opportunities for career progression in an ambitious and growing organisation
This advert is about recruitment, but just as important as finding people is keeping people. As the company has grown, so have the opportunities for our team to grow with us. We've continued to create new roles and opportunities to meet our changing needs as we progress, and we want our team to see Ashburton as a place they can stay and build a career, not just another stepping stone or glass ceiling along the way.
5. No previous General Practice experience is necessary
Never having worked in the sector before isn't a barrier to joining our team. The majority of our pharmacists had never worked in this setting before joining us and we find many pharmacists from outside the sector are looking for a route out of their current role and into a new challenge. We provide this route. We also welcome pharmacists who work or have worked in General Practice before. We think a variety of experience and backgrounds makes us a stronger organisation and we know a lot of pharmacists already in General Practice may feel under supported or not given enough direction to get the most out of their career. This is a problem we feel we address in spades.
